If you found this page because you are pregnant and employed then accept my congratulations!!! This means that you’ll need to notify your work about when you wish to take your maternity leave. To do so you will need to write a Maternity Leave Letter.

A maternity leave letter  is simply a leave of absence letter written for the purpose of taking time off work to focus on a pregnancy, delivery and care for the baby after delivery.

Most companies have a maternity leave policy so applying for your maternity leave is usually quite straight forward! In addition when you have a baby everyone already knows you will be going on maternity leave! All you have to do is confirm the dates you are requesting for!

Maternity Leave Letter – Before you start!

Before writing your maternity leave letter, you first must determine the number of weeks of maternity leave you’d like to take  as well as how many weeks you are entitled to. You will also need to decide whether you want to request a gradual return to work or not.

Gradual Return to work may not be available in the maternity leave policy of your company, however in the united states and Canada, there are provision for such.

Take note that the governments policies on Maternity leave changes from time to time. It is very important to find out all that you can get before proceeding with your formal application and writing your maternity leave letter. Please take the time to gain an understanding about your company’s policies and do your best to make sure that you don’t propose anything that would give you less than the maximum benefits that you are entitled to.

Dear Mr. Solomon,

This letter is to inform you that I  am pregnancy I intend  to take the allotted 16 weeks of maternity leave available to me. I would like to start my maternity leave on June 22, 2016 and return to the office on October 20th, 2016 if the pregnancy and delivery goes as planned.

I understand that there are priority projects that I am currently handling. I hope to complete them before my maternity leave begins. Should there be any need to contact me, I should be able call in to the office periodically. I intend on delegating  some of my responsibilities to my Assistant Ms Joanna,  who works with me during my maternity leave. I plan to let her take up all the new projects from now on to prepare her for the time I will be on leave.

I will let you know as soon as possible, should my plans change for any reason. I really appreciate the provision the office has made for us to time away from work so that we can prepare for the birth of our babies and take some time to adjust to being new a new mother.

I have attached the Maternity leave form that shows my expected delivery date from my doctor. Kindly let me know if you need any more information.

Thank you,

Maria Lopez.
